Wood
Statement
I am finding carving wood very seductive. The work of Alison Saar lured me into it. Wood/trees have to "speak" to me with their character, before I want to work with them. In woodcarving, like assemblage, I try to take into consideration the character of the material I am using as I carve, and let it show through. So it is not just me manipulating the material and influencing the outcome. I like the fact I am in essence collaborating with the material. That gives my carving a bit more mystery, which thrills me. I have been fascinated by and attracted to the wonderful First Nation totems and carvings that I saw in the University of Vancouver Anthropology Museum. It is my vision to carve enough large sculptures to have an installation to create such awe in others.
